I am a very open person with an open mind to match. I have also got extensive experience as a Brazilian waxing professional for both men and females.
Last Saturday I went for a job interview at a little salon in Melbourne's south eastern suburbs at the foot of the ranges.
Standard procedure I thought. As the lady requested she see my technique performing a Brazilian and an eyebrow wax on one of her clients. I was more than happy to participate.
Please note before I get any further; as soon as I walked into this salon I was impressed as the owner had her bachelor of health science from Victoria university up on the wall. Impressive I though a nurse ...a medical professional.
What is your automatic though? Nurse = clean hygienic etc ....
WRONG!!!!
I went though and let this 'client' get prepared. As she lay on the table and assumed the position to have her rear end waxed ...I felt a little uncomfortable.
Warning sign 1: there was a bath towel covering the bed...the only thing between this ladies genitals and the towel was a piece of paper towel....so client after client places their bare skin..their bits...their pubic hair...their sweat...their flaky skin on this towel without it being sanitized before the next. I don't know about you but I wouldn't fancy lying in someone's skin flakes an pubic hairs.
I bit my tongue and my eyes darted looking for gloves, I opened all the drawers and looked on the shelves..maybe she had run out and forgot to restock I thought..ill ask.
'Where are the gloves?' I asked with a smile ...
"Oh don't be silly we don't use gloves here, you don't need them" the owner brushed off as if I had asked a ridiculous question.
I felt ill...I felt dirty...I didn't no what to say , I wanted to walk out but I obliged I don't even know why?! I think out of awkward politeness but I should have thrown my hands in the air and said fuck this shit!
I proceeded to wax this lady ...from an outsider I probably looked terrified and unprofessional as I tried my best to avoid touching this ladies crotch bare handed.
I finished as quickly as possible ...I wanted out !
But then there were eyebrows ...but there was no soap at the sink ...no hand sanitizer ....seriously?!?!
Once I walked out of this interview of potentially 25 hours a week ...I blocked this lady on Facebook and deleted her number. There is no way in hell I would every return there.
Not only do I find it unhygienic as a therapist as I client I also could not comprehend someone waxing me without gloves.
The cross contamination of this place was insane.
My closing comment on this is that...I might be desperate for work but not desperate to compromise my OHS training !
